🚩Tactical Memo 077: Nobody Is Coming to Train You

Welcome to Tactical Memo: Playbooks for high performers & the leaders they'll become. Career realities they never taught you. Built for the AI era.

Every issue hands you a specific move you can use that week. And once a month, I go deeper with live webinars, workshops, and cohorts to help you put it into practice.

Nobody is coming to train you.

Read that again. It's the whole memo.

Business Insider just covered a survey by the consultancy Emergn. About eight in ten CEOs said workers should upskill themselves on AI. About eight in ten workers said the company should provide the training.

A standoff. Both sides waiting for the other to blink.

Here's the reality. While the standoff sits there, your skills have an expiration date. And the date doesn't care whose fault it is.

The CEO of Envoy said it out loud in the same article: everyone has to learn the new thing, even if it means doing it on your own time. And he added the part that should make you sit up. When you go interview somewhere else, you'll be expected to show up already AI fluent.

So the training debate is a trap. You can win the argument and lose the decade.

The company owes you a paycheck. It does not owe you a career. That one has always been yours.

Here's the play I'd run if I were you.

Build Receipts, Not Certificates.

A certificate says you sat through something. A receipt says you changed how you work. Only one of those gets you hired, promoted, or protected.

Here is how to run it.

  1. Pick one task you do every week. Not a side project. A real one. The report you build, the prep you do, the analysis you grind through. The most boring recurring thing you own is the best candidate.

  2. Rebuild it with AI this week. Not perfectly. Just differently. Figure out what you can hand off and what you have to keep. The keeping is the skill. Anyone can push a button. Knowing what still needs your judgment is what they pay for.

  3. Write down what happened. Three lines. What I handed off. What I kept. What broke. That's a receipt. Ten of those beat any certificate on earth.

  4. Show one receipt to someone who matters. Your boss. A skip-level. Say it plain: "I rebuilt how I do the account prep. Cut my grind, kept my judgment. Want to see it?" You just became the person who's ahead instead of the person who's waiting.

  5. Keep the file. Every receipt goes in one doc. That doc is your next interview, your next review, your next negotiation. It's proof you don't stall when the ground moves.

The difference is one sentence.

Instead of, in your review: "I completed the AI Fundamentals course this quarter."

You say: "I rebuilt three of my weekly workflows with AI. Here's what I automated, here's what I kept, and here's what it freed me up to take on."

Same quarter. Same hours. The first sounds like everyone. The second sounds like the next promotion.

Yes, this costs you some of your own time. That's not fair. Doesn't matter. The market doesn't grade on fair. It grades on ready.

But notice what the play actually asks. Not nights and weekends of courses. One real task, rebuilt inside the work you're already doing. The learning and the job become the same thing. That's the only version of upskilling that survives a real calendar.

The people waiting for the official training program are building a paper trail of compliance. You're building a paper trail of capability. Two years from now, those are two very different careers.

The Emergn survey isn't really about training. It's a leading indicator of who gets left. Eight in ten workers are waiting. Be in the other two.

So this week, run it.

Pick one recurring task. Rebuild it with AI. Write the three-line receipt. Show it to one person up the chain. Start the file.

Nobody is coming to train you.

Good. That means nobody else gets the credit.
